Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General, is the first Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health. His report asserts that mental illness is a critical public health problem that must be addressed by the Nation.
- The Department of Health and Human Services on Mental Health, December, 1999
This report on mental health addressed courses of action including building the science base, overcoming stigma, improving public awareness of effective treatment, ensuring the supply of services and providers, and improving various treatment issues. The report also focuses on the connection between mental health and physical health, barriers to receiving mental health treatment, and the specific mental health issues of children, adults and the elderly.
