Access Points for Mental Health Assistance
Serendip has neither the professional skills needed nor the inclination to provide advice to individuals with regard to specific mental health problems. People seeking such advice should contact health care professionals. In addition to their own doctors, health care advice can be obtained from federal, state, and local mental health organizations. To facilitate such connections, the list of links below is provided.
- State Departments and Divisions of Mental Health
This site allows you to find state mental health services offered in your area. Click on the state in which you want to obtain services. A page will appear that contains information on various mental health issues and has links to mental health resources located in your local area. Since this page will differ according to each state, you will need to review this page and determine which information is appropriate for your needs.
- National Mental Health Association
First, click on resource center. This page provides toll-free numbers for referrals to specific mental health services or support programs in your community. This site also provides a link to your nearest NMHA affiliate.
- Mental Health Links
This page, from the Knowledge Exchange Network, provides a list of links for specific mental health issues. Simply click on the topic you need assistance with and you will see a page of related resources offering different forms of assistance.
- Hotlines
This page contains a list of toll-free hotlines organized by mental health issue.
- National Health Information Center
This page contains toll-free numbers for organizations that provide health-related information, education, and support.
- If You Are in Crisis
This page from the American Counseling Association has toll-free phone numbers of nationwide hotlines where someone is available to just listen or give a referral to a local agency.
- How Can I Find A National Certified Counselor?
At the bottom of this page you can select the type of National Board Certified Counselor you need in your local area. Include information on your local geographic area and click on the type of counselor you need. You can then send an e-mail to request a list of counselors in your area.
- Find A Psychologist (APA)
This page will provide you with a toll-free phone number to call for a referral to a psychologist in your area. The operator will use your zip code to locate and connect you with the referral system in your area.
- ABE's On-Line Directory
This on-line form allows you to enter information to obtain the specific type of mental health assistance you need in your local area. Enter your name , local geographic area, and information specifying the type of mental health assistance you need (type of therapy, age group, and focus of practice).
- AMA Physician Sheet
Provides information on almost every licensed physician in the United States. Click on physician name or medical specialty to find a medical physician located in your local area.
