10 Questions College Officials Should Ask About Diversity
In The Chronicle Review (August 15, 2003), Robert Shireman recommends that private colleges do regular self-assessments focused on diversity. Here is his list of "10 Questions College Officials Should Ask About Diversity":
- How do we define diversity?
- Why do we have this particular array of students?
- Who gets financial aid?
- How successful are our students?
- What multicultural education are students receiving?
- What does it feel like as a student to be here? (i.e.: "When will this be my campus, instead of someone else's campus that is trying to be a welcoming place for me?")
- Who are our faculty leaders?
- What are our relationships with nearby communities?
- Who is thinking about these issues on our campus?
- What do we want to change, and how will we know that we have changed it? (as Yogi Berra said, "You got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there.")
