Center for Science in Society

A new grant to the College from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute will support new internship opportunities for undergraduates beginning in 2004-2005.

HHMI Science in Society Undergraduate Fellowship Program

This program is intended to encourage interest in the sciences through special opportunities to design novel interdisciplinary science majors reflecting a commitment of the Center to connections between the sciences and other spheres of human activity. Examples of potential majors include "Biology and Culture of Mental Health" and "Environmental Architecture".

Students will design a program reflecting their particular interests and seek approval through the standard College procedures for independent majors. In designing their programs, students should involve at least two faculty sponsors of whom at least one must be a member of the Center Steering Committee. A proposal (including a major work plan, supporting letters from sponsors and dean, and a transcript) should be prepared during the sophomore year and submitted to the college Independent Majors Committee. Approved proposals will be reviewed jointly by the Center for Science in Society Steering Committee and the HHMI Advisory Committee who will make final decisions on which students to name as Science in Society Fellows.

Fellows will be provided an internship in the summer following their junior year to work on a project related to their program, and receive an annual allowance for professional travel. In the second semester of their senior year, Science in Society Fellows will be required to make a presentation on their major work as a conribution to ongoing Center programs.

Additional HHMI supported Opportunities for Undergraduates

Precollege Science Education Internships

This program is intended to encourage undergraduates considering careers in precollege science education. Students may pursue a variety of ten-week internship options, including working with the K-12 summer institute program, and assisting precollege teachers with curriculum projects. Proposals should be developed in in consultation with science and Education Program faculty. Postsecondary Science Education Internships

This program is intended to encourage undergraduates interested in careers in science to gain experiences in science pedagogy. The ten-week internships will be with Bryn Mawr science faculty to work on course and curriculum development projects. Off-Campus Research Internships

This program is intended to provide undergraduates interested in careers in science with support for mentored research projects in off-campus environments.
