"The Regulation of Madness in Saint-Louis-du-Senegal, 1850-1914"
The paper examines the indigenous conceptions of mental illness and
the ways in which the French colonial authorities tried to regulate madness,
as well as the agency of the family in mediating custody for the mental
patients. The paper goes beyond the binary opposition colonizer/colonized to
also include the illness experience of some French citizens in a colonial
city.
