Student Research and Broadening Access

We provide here other Fellowship and Volunteer Opportunities in addition to HHMI-funded internships and fellowships:

Bryn Mawr College Summer Research Internships

BMC is now accepting applications for the on-campus summer research opportunities with BMC faculty. The details of this program are given below.

1.  In summer 2005, the College will provide 35 undergraduate research stipends @$3,200/each.   Please note that these stipends are restricted to Bryn Mawr students and Haverford students majoring in the sciences at Bryn Mawr, who are doing discovery-based research in the laboratory or field with Bryn Mawr faculty.  They are not open to Swarthmore students or Bryn Mawr/Haverford students working at other institutions/organizations or on pedagogical projects.

If you are Bryn Mawr students or Haverford students who are majoring at Bryn Mawr who are interested in science pedagogy projects and off-campus research, we now have separate funding for these.  Please refer interested students to the Science Horizons internships being supported by our HHMI grant (/hhmi/student.html).

2.  The dates of the 10-week summer program will be May 31 though August 6.

3.  Please note that students receiving stipends through the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program, as well as those who will be supported off faculty research grants, do not have to fill out one of these application forms.  In addition, students should not use this form to apply for the HHMI-funded Science Horizons Internships.

4.  Completed forms should be turned in to Barbara Edwards in Park 290, who will make a list of all the applicants by department.  This list will be reviewed by the Science Chairs so that we can decide how many stipends each department gets and prepare a list of finalists and up to five alternates (broken down by department).   I will send the final list to Resources so that they can assign the stipends and get approval from the Dean's Office.

Stipend - $3,200 for 10 week summer program.  Applications are due by Friday, February 25, 2005. Click here to access the application form.

Other Summer Grant Opportunities are listed on the Dean’s Website:

Volunteer at the Franklin Institute of Science, Philadelphia (posted 10-13-04)

The Franklin Institute is currently looking for students who are
interested in volunteering here at the Museum. This is a wonderful
opportunity for those students interested in biology, since many of
our exhibits touch on that particular subject.

Although training is provided, individuals who have a science, technology, or education background, and enjoy working with children are encouraged to apply.

Volunteering can be done on weekdays or weekends. Interested applicants should be willing to commit to at least 100 hours of service by volunteering on a weekly or biweekly basis.

Volunteer benefits include free admission to the Museum and theaters, discounts in the Museum shops and restaurant, free parking or transportation reimbursement, invitations to special events and functions, and the opportunity to earn a free Museum membership.
