Program History


Goals of Our Current Program

  • recruit and retain science majors
  • expose science students to broadly applicable computational methods and increase their understanding of the connections within and among traditional disciplines.
  • prepare undergraduates to pursue a wide range of careers requiring sophistication in science, irrespective of their majors.

Award Year:2004

Bryn Mawr College is a private baccalaureate institution in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. HHMI awarded the college grants of $800,000 in 1988, $600,000 in 1993, $1 million in 1996, and $1.2 million in 2004 for combined total funding of $3.6 million through the undergraduate program.

The 2004 grant supports the following programs:

Student Research and Broadening Access to Science

Science Horizons Internships Program, the Science in Society Fellowship Program, and the Summer Science Program.

Curriculum, Equipment, and Laboratory Development

Development of computational methods courses, acquisition of computing equipment for advanced computing laboratory, development of integrative biology courses, and renovation of biology teaching laboratory.

Faculty Development

Faculty Development Fund and the HHMI Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Computational Methods in Science.

Precollege and Other Outreach Programs

Summer institutes for precollege teachers, Scientists on Demand, Fridays in the Lab, and Serendip website.
