SOCIAL WORK DOCTORAL STUDY IN OCCUPATIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
-- Every year in the United States, millions of workers are injured on the job. About 7,000 of them die from their injuries. Many others are disabled, sometimes without adequate compensation or medical support.
-- OSHA reports that one quarter of the American workforce is exposed at work to hazardous substances such as asbestos, lead and toxic chemicals. According to the U.S. Public Health Service, 100,000 American workers a year die from diseases caused by workplace exposures. Work-related ergonomic health problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome are becoming epidemic.
-- Workers and non-workers alike may be exposed to environmental health hazards in their communities -- toxic waste dumps, polluted air, contaminated drinking water, residential lead poisoning, dangerous consumer products.
-- The health burden of occupational and environmental disease and injury falls most heavily on disempowered groups -- minorities, the poor, women, migrants, and children. With the recent upsurge in child labor and sweatshops, occupational health risks to the most vulnerable workers are escalating. In terms of environmental hazards, the extra risks borne by minority communities have recently led to urgent calls for "environmental justice."
In addressing these human problems, social work has much to contribute. Yet our profession has traditionally been underrepresented in services and policy-making related to health and safety in the work and home environment. Most social workers lack the information and interdisciplinary connections needed for work in this field.
To help fill the training gap, Bryn Mawr College has developed special resources in Occupational and Environmental Health integrated into our regular doctoral curriculum and supervised by faculty actively working on occupational and environmental health problems. This educational initiative was started more than ten years ago with support from the Lois and Samuel Silberman Fund.
