Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General, is the first Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health. His report asserts that mental illness is a critical public health problem that must be addressed by the Nation.

- The Department of Health and Human Services on Mental Health
This report on mental helath addressed courses of action including building the science base, overcoming stigma, improving public awareness of effective treatment, ensuring the supply of services and providers, and improving various treatment issues. The report also focuses on the connection between mental health and physical health, barriers to receiving mental health treatment, and the specific mental health issues of children, adults and the elderly.

According to the report, the nation is facing a public crisis in the mental health of children and adolescents. The National Action Agenda outlines goals and strategies to improve the services for children and adolescents with mental health disorders.

- NIMH Panic Disorder Consensus Statement
This report from NIMH disucsses panic disorders and their Epidemiology, History, Course, Diagnosis, Current Treatments, Adverse Effects of Treatments, and Questions for Future Research.
- NIMH Fact Sheet on Research on Depression
Discussion topies in this report include Symptoms and Types of Depression, Research for Treatment, Genetics Research, Stress and Depression, Brain Imaging, Hormonal Abnormalities, Co-occurrence of Depression and Anxiety Disorders, Depression Across the Life Span, Treatment and Future Research.
Prevention
- Plan for Prevention Research
This report to the National Advisory Mental Health Council presents an integration and summary of the conclusions and recommendations concerned with advancing the scientific agenda for research on the prevention of mental disorders. The report constitutes a national agenda for research efforts aimed at the prevention of the full spectrum of mental disorders and represents the culmination of more than five years of scientific investigation and review. Report must be ordered.

Healthy People is a national health promotion and disease prevention initiative that brings together government agencies, professional organizations, businesses, communities and individuals to improve the health of all Americans. Healthy People 2010 builds on initiatives pursued over the past two decades.
