Cultural / Sociological Considerations

There is a important and complicated relationship between "mental health" as a biological and/or medical attribute of individuals, on the one hand, and, on the other, cultural expectations, definitions, and influences on individual behavior. Cultural factors are important in defining "mental health" and may play a role in altering the "mental health" status of individuals. In addition, changes in culture may affect the environment around individuals in a way that influences whether they are or are not seen as "healthy". The references provided here are intended to allow readers to explore all of these complex interplays between individual behavior and the social/cultural context within which it occurs and is evaluated.
