WHERE SHOULD WE PLACE MATHEMATICS IN THE TEACHING OF OTHER DISCIPLINES?

Physical and social scientists often use mathematics as a tool to aid our understanding of the world. Typically, introductory courses in both the sciences and social sciences emphasize using mathematics and problem solving based approaches. Does this approach help or hinder student understanding of concepts? How can we help students develop both their conceptual understanding of a discipline as well as their ability to utilize mathematics as a way of extending that understanding?
