biology tessellations
lesson of a honeybee
m.randall
pre-classwork question: what are tessellations?
classwork:
problem: how could honeybees show randomness
with the use of tessellations?
procedure:
- review three types of polygons
(triangles, squares, and hexagons)
- students will draw a grouping of 6 hexagons.
- students will load clarisworks (mac) and follow
the steps of "making tessellations in color."
- students will use hexagons instead of rectangles
as a figure to draw.
observations:
- make several rows (5 or more) of polygons
in the procedure.
- how does a honeycomb resemble this tessellation?
- how can the honeybee show randomness in building
the honeycombs of a beehive?
conclusions:
