The East Africa Resource and Study Center, a volunteer non-profit arts organization in Powelton Village, West Philadelphia, exists to promote understanding, acceptance and appreciation of different cultures, build bridges across racial/cultural group divisions and build responsive and responsible community by working in partnerships with other neighborhood and city cultural, educational, arts organizations.


The agency accomplishes its mission by: providing educational programs to schools, community groups and a wider audience; sponsoring cultural events (lectures, film showing, forums, exhibitions, performances); providing opportunities for research on East Africa cultural history and diaspora experience; offering opportunities for intergenerational transmission of cultural heritage to the East African local community; offering supportive services to address the needs of the East African and African American local community.

Event of the Month:
Friday, March 11, 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm

Kangas: Language of Self-Expression in East African Culture Kenyan artist, textile expert and educator Lucy Lau will introduce participants to the fascinating world of meaningful communication and self- expression through the ways of wearing and tying kangas and the choice of written messages displayed. The lecture and slide presentation will discuss the origins of this artifact, its history and current cultural meanings.
