Having done core samplings on the floor of the Mediteranean Sea they have found that over the past 200,000 years the sea has emptied and filled 6 times. Not too far below the water level at the Straits of Gibraltar there is a land barrier running from Africa to Europe that acts as a dam so that when the level of the Atlantic drops low enough it prevents the ocean from feeding the sea. There seems to be 15,000 year cycles of global warming and cooling that contributes to the sea emptying and filling. Now, lets head off to North America. Record keeping has shown that there seems to be a thirty year cycle with hurricanes. We're entering a high cycle. Industrialization and cars have only been on the planet for a hundred years. The longer we've been burning fossil fuels the more we learn how to burn them cleanly, especially over the past thirty years. These are inconvenient facts. I think Al should have called his movie "Chicken Little and the Sky is Falling."

See the documentary then comment. Going back 685,000 years in hx - the temperature and CO2 level has never been so high simultaneously. How could there not be global warming when 90% of the sun's rays used to bounce back out of our atmosphere and now 90% remain trapped due to CO2. The ice samples are like fingerprints measuring the CO2 in our atmosphere - they are not political - just proof - the ice clearly reveals when the Clean Air Act passed - it tells a natural story. Having recently watched both Inconvenient Truth and Thank You for Smoking at the Bryn Mawr Theater, I see shades of the latter movie in John's comments: Obfuscation by Misdirection (what do cores in the Med have to do with what Al Gore was saying?). Even the Bush administration's EPA admits that global warming is happening and that human activities have had an accelerating effect on it. And that's the key here -- acceleration. If something happens over 50,000 years (there were Neanderthals around back then) environments have a chance to adjust. But when those same changes happen in 50, or even 500 years, the results can be a great deal more disruptive.

We all know that our CO2 output is going up, not down, and that while we may have found ways to burn fossil fuels more efficiently, we have at the same time increased many-fold the total amount of fossil fuels we burn. Here in America, we like to throw them out of the tailpipe of Lincoln Navigators and other huge piles of metal just for the privilege of being seen in a big car. We also like to heat all that air at the top of the Great Rooms in our McMansions where nobody will ever feel all those BTU's being squandered on one-ups-manship.

At one time Yankees had a reputation of canny ingenuity. Now we're just obese bullies gobbling up the worlds resources as fast as we can, mostly wasting them rather that actually getting all there is out of them. It's not a question of if this is happening. It is. It is a question of what we might want to do about it. Many of us, John included, I presume, plan to do nothing, trusting to the government and big business to see us through.

Others of us would like to change the way we do things. We might try to follow the route of the anti-smoking campaigns: A case where another big business swore up and down that what we all knew was happening wasn't until we started suing the pants off them and winning. I'm not a lawyer and I don't know what laws the auto industry might be sued under, but I expect some clever person will find a way one day.

In the meantime, we need to let the people who are wasting our resources so obviously -- I do mean you Mr. Big Car Driver and you Mrs. Massive House Owner -- know that we think they are greedy, selfish pigs and that when we meet them socially we should turn our backs on them and give them a few of our own natural gases, just to make them feel at home.

Actually, John, I drive a hybrid car and I live in a lovely old stone house. This is not about bitterness. It is about screaming WAKE UP at someone who has fallen asleep at the wheel of their SUV and is about to careen off the road -- a sudden, abrupt change in their journey that the pot holes ten miles back have not prepared them for.

Americans need to start living in the world in a responsible manner. We need to look at what might be happening to our environment and taking sane, sensible measures to offset the potential damage. We need to reduce our use of fossil fuels and hydrocarbon products. We waste much of what we use, getting no value for it. Instead we increase our dependence on foreign oil, risk damage to our environment and generally behave as if there is no tomorrow.

Pretending its not happening will not matter when it does happen. Maybe not to us, but to our children or grandchildren. And what if I'm wrong, John? What's the worst we'll have done to ourselves? Clean up the air? Improve the gas mileage on our vehicles? Save ourselves some money by recycling? Oh no! That sounds pretty scary to me.

We managed to back off from nuclear brinkmanship, I feel confident that we'll manage to muddle through this need to energize ourselves burning fossil fuels. Thank goodness we're not using horses anymore, we'd be wading waist deep in horse manure. I'm relived to see that you're driving a hybrid, I was worried that maybe you were walking. Over the past thirty period I spent eighteen of those years driving a taxi in Philadelphia, Buffalo and Niagara Falls. I, so to speak, hung up my keys in December 2002, I've returned to Haverford, and have not been behind a steering wheel since. I'm not in a hurry to get a car, the R5 is my car, and I'm snug as a bug in a rug in my one bedroom apartment on Lancaster Ave.

When I threw out the core sampling thing I should have taken more time to explain what they had found in those samplings. Somebody asked what do they have to do with anything? What they found was alternating densities of the remains of microscopic aquatic organisms. During the thousands of years of lessening water levels they found there was a increasing density of the organisms. Not unlike land animals gathering around the last remaing water holes during times of drought. The concentration of the little critters under water became greater per volume and when they died and settled into the sediment of the sea floor they were clued in as to what was happening to the planet. During periods of cooling, the expansion of the polar caps lowered the water levels of the planet making what water was left more crowded. During past warming periods the water levels increase thereby giving the poor things some 'breathing' room. Being given more 'elbow room' they didn't pile up as much on top of each other when they died and then settled into that sediment on the bottom of the sea. They found six alternatings of the density of the remains of these creatures.

The report of these findings I saw on one of those PBS, Discovery, Nova or Nova type shows about fifteen years ago. Since the last ice age ended about ten thousand years ago I guess over the next thousand years we're going to make a gradual transition into another cooling period. Maybe it will get a little warmer for a while.

I'm sure we'll figure things out so we won't be wallowing in our own filth.

In the mean time I think I'll start saving for that SUV which will probably be atomic powered by the time I get it together. I'm retired and do a lot of sitting around. Maybe I'll have second thoughts on that and appreciate the benefits of the exercise I've been getting of late and just keep on walking.

The Professor Giegengack Q&A and discussion at the Cafe last night was excellent! 180 people at the fim and about 25 at the cafe discusssion. What I came away from the discussion was a clarification that scientific debate on the causes and effects of global warming will continue, but global warming and high energy prices are indesputably very real, and as Giegengack recommends the most important things citizens can do is 1.) to encourage our politicians to put a high tax on energy use to change how our society uses energy, and 2.) for this country become much more energy efficient.

I thank Prof. Giegengack for taking the time to prepare an excellent presentation and slides, and to answer all of our questions. Can his slides be made avaiable to us?

As I watched the movie, I wondered why Global Warming was portrayed as a Democratic issue by the current administration and Al Gore. This is not a Democratic or Republican issue, but a survival issue eventually for many. This is just another example of the politicalization of science by the Bush administration. I'm only 21 and I make peanuts in a year. I make just enough to pay a 10th of university. It would be really brilliant if taxes went up so that I could have even more of what I already have... nothing! I thought the Al Gore movie was good, especially in illustrating the environmental degradation trends are taking us in the wrong direction and are accelerating even more than we thought a few years ago due to the recent, rapid industrialization of India, China, and maybe Brazil, plus of course our own economic expansion. Yes, Gore is one-sided on the political aspects of the issue. Where I think his movie woefully falls down on the job is in failing to give very specific solutions that can be implemented NOW. Fuzzy talk about wind power and hybrid cars just doesn't cut it. But, as this movie is also a political statement, he doesn't dare recommend much higher gasoline taxes, reduction of coal use or banning over-sized non-commercial vehicles. These options are are painful, economically and politically.

we know that the cause of venus's extreme heat is do to the thick Co2 atmosphere. this traps light and heat from reflecting back into space. we also know that many of the polutants from emissions we set into the air consist of Co2. connect the dots... just look at venus for examples of too much atmosphere and mars as too little. we are polluting the atmosphere and the result in this particular case is warming the planet.

on a personal note: i have lived in new england all my life. i grew up in new hampshire and now live in vermont. never do i remember any floods like the one last fall or the one earlier this year in new hampshire. i never remember too much water being a big deal but that has seem to have changed. winter has also seemed to mild down as well.

Regardless of what side of the fence you're on for this argument, be aware that advances in core analysis have jumped light years over the past 15 years. And the technology is still in it's infancy. Likewise, it's not always a good policy to be basing a theory on outdated scientific theories that are in a constant state of change.

To clear up some points for edification. By your references to the sea "emptying and filling" i'm assuming that you're referring to glaciation periods. Glacials are colder periods, interglacials are warmer. We're currently in an interglacial period already. A gradual transition such as you're describing wouldn't really be the cause for alarm that advocates of global warming as a "crisis". However, there isn't any evidence suggesting that a gradual transition is underway, in fact the evidence has been suggested acceleration, which is where the primary cause for concern is.

Now, while the impact of "greenhouse gases", or industrial related pollution aren't fully proven or even completely understood by even the foremost in their fields, arguing that the human factor has had no impact on the global environment is just downright incorrect. Even simple deforestation has a profound impact on the global ecosystem, and that's not even the tip of the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

I'd also suggest that anyone interested in global warming should also educate themselves on Global Dimming -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_dimming, as it is also a fundamental factor of our global situation, and will be a topic discussed when governments actually get to the point of talking about real issues instead of just partisan infighting, and recover from their inability to listen to anyone that disagrees with them.

A causual observer need only assess the haze that prevails over any metropolitan area to draw that conclusion.

After hearing Gore speak earlier this year, I looked further into global warming, but also began to read about the problem of "peak" petroleum production. Either way, we have a fossil fuel issue: we're probably destroying our environment AND we're running out of the stuff that our society operates on.

Regardless as to the reasons that might motivate us to face our "addiction to fossil fuels", we are profoundly obligated to personally and collectively address the crisis immediately. Take your pick as to an appropriate motivation to dramatically alter the manner in which we live; namely, our dependence on foreign fuel as a nation, the impending global economic crisis resulting from growing instability in the middle east (when fuel supplies are limited), the legacy that our children will inherit, global warming and the horrors that it might entail in our own lifetime, 2515 deaths of American soldiers in Iraq and/or simply pull up a video clip of the innocent American contractors in Iraq, having their head sawed off while still alive....for what. Albeit a drop in the bucket, I can only say that Mr. Gore and my own eyes have convinced me to take personal action.

Reading through the posts on this website, it seems like a lot of you really have the right idea about global warming and it's current and potential impacts to our way of life and well being. Here in PA, the recent bouts of extreme weather are only a sign of what is to come.

I am starting up a new global warming campaign in Pennsylvania as a Greenpeace organizer. It's called Project Hot Seat. I agree with a lot of you that this issue transcends party lines, right/left divides, and all the political animosity that has prevented our country from becoming a partner in the global effort to fight cilmate change.

This Fall, we will send a message to Congressional candidates -- regardless of their affiliations -- that they need to wake up and actually do something about global warming. We can't let the gas and oil industry continue to run Congress when our future is at stake.

In a recent interview, the interviewer asked Al Gore if he lived "green". He mentioned that he owned a hi-bred auto and recycled. He didn't mentioned the size of his home(s). My guess is that he is not living in a few hundred sq. foot apartment or condo.

I liked reading your views (they are very funny), you have debunked a lot of scientists with your one example of the cores. Your understanding of science is good enough for a PR representative for Shell Oil. Its a simple equation, you burn all the fossil fuels that energy is deposited into the earth, and environment. How can you be so naive to think that the world is big enough not to be affected by our actions.

I was recently in Malaysia, and even the local jungle guides are noticing a huge decline in indegenous species as well as thinning of the jungle cannopy caused by constant smog. The smog comes from burning of rainforests in Indonesia and Sumatra where there is little government environmental protection. Just another example of our influence over the environment.

I pitty your ignorance, but I get some satisfaction when I watch arrogant people like yourself cringing while filing their SUVs at the fuel pump :)

I just returned from a year spent traveling in Europe and I'm amazed at America's astounding capacity for ignorant willfulness. Anywhere else in the world, people would see the consequences of something like global warming and say, "I may not understand this, but I'm going to do what I can to prevent it from happening." Only in America, populated with the likes of John Cunningham, would people look at a problem where the consequence is quite literally the end of the world and say something to the effect of, "The Democrats want to fix it so I'll be damned if I'm going to do anything about it." Don't like Al Gore? That's fine. Al Gore has got very little to do with global warming, he's just one person talking about it. It's the same thing we do about anti-tobacco legislation or dealing with the sheer fatness of our people!

What's the worst that could happen if we did something about this? John and his ilk should get their heads out of their hind parts and say, "I don't know everything about this problem but that's ok; the consequences are too dire to leave this alone." What happened to the days when America was the can-do nation that solved problems in the world? Now any problem that gets solved is solved despite us, not because of us. What does Al Gore's father have anything to do with anything? This forum discusses global warming and Al Gore's film about that topic. Would you call someone a hypocrite for speaking out against pedophilia if their father was a pedophile? Get it together, man. Al Gore is one of many people trying to right a wrong and if his father had something to do with the creation of that wrong, then more power to him.
