Weighing in from the meaning end of the spectrum...

...it occurs to me that what is here variously referred to as a binding/streaming/"grouping"/timing/tracking/"fitting"/filtering problem...

might be used to describe not only brain processes and auditory analysis but (@ a higher level of complexity) the making of narrative: the partly conscious-but-often-largely-unconscious activity of creating a serial order, shaping a sequence of cause and effect that "filters" out what doesn't contribute to a clear narrative line.

I'm teaching Moby Dick this month, and the students are in the midst of marveling about all the different narratives that can be made of that narrative, both w/in the text and out of it:

we are all reading the same big book, but interpret it differently....Melville may be trying to tell us to be flexible and be able to look at things as though we were Stubb AND Starbuck....We are warned not to become Ahab, tragically only able to interpret things one way.

Which is to say...
this need to organize serially? might productively be reclassified as a feature rather than a bug, an opportunity rather than a problem.
