Sounds like a WONDERFUL science fair project. You can find some basic information about the brain at Neuroscience for Kids, a good not-only-for-kids starting place organized by Eric Chudler at Washington University in St. Louis. And there's a list of links on gender differences" in general in the nervous system from the neuroscience guide at About.com. There's LOTS on interest (and controversy) about gender differences in the nervous system and behavior, as you'll discover for yourself if you try (and you should) "gender differences" in any web search engine (such as Google.com). You can narrow your search by adding some additional search terms like touch and/or somatosensory, and/or brain, and/or "nervous system" (the quotes make the search engine look for the phrase instead of separate words, which might occur anywhere in the document found). Looks to me like there's a lot of interest at the moment in gender differences in pain perception, but not much along the lines of the question you're asking.

That's good, because the real excitement of a good science fair project is having a question that you're interested in, one where you can do your own thinking about how to collect observations to explore it. I'd keep it simple, if I were you (that's the best kind of science). Maybe make four or five shapes out of wood or clay (a cube, a sphere, etc), put them in bags, have your friends reach in and try and identify them, record for each friend whether they are male or female and how many shapes they correctly identified (or maybe how long it took them to identify each)?

That's just a suggestion. There are lots of other ways to do it, and you may well think of better ones you like better. If you do do something along these lines, write us back and tell us what you did and how it came out? Enjoy exploring.

Subject: deja vu
Date: Sat Jun 3 02:34:39 EDT 2000
Comments:
Hi I have to write a resarch paper for my writing class. We had to come up with five possible topics in the first class and because I am highly uncreative during days, the only one that seemed apropriate to the teacher was deja vu. That's how I got into that matter but since I have started my research I found so many explanations and comments and whatever on deja vu that are just wrong, that I finally would like to know whether it is something that is wrong with me. I had so many deja vus in my life, that I just stopped caring, which makes me wonder if they still are deja vus because they don't come with "strange" feelings. Anyway, I kind of don't want to call them clairvoyance because they are just unimportant scenes so I will stick with "deja vu". However the thing is, that they are dreams, that's for sure. I could easily prove that because I often wake up, remember some scenes from a dream and know, they are going to be a deja vu one day. But it doesn't happen regularly, sometimes almost daily, sometimes not for years. But when it happens again, I could just write the scene down in detail and wait until it happens. The other deja vus are certainly just some of the thousands of dreams we can't remember the next morning. What I want to know is, how this fits in any of the psychological, scientific or reincarnational explanations an if I am really the only one or did those resarchers just never research on people who actually know, what is so striking about deja vu.

Subject: Brain areas...

We have known about areas of the Brain for, say, SPEECH, Brocca's area and Wernicke's area. Recently, it has been shown with CAT scan that the Speech areas are together for two or more languages if the languages are learned before age 4 to 6. After that, any NEW language is placed in it's own area and requires synaptic reactions between the "original" speech area and the new language area, more anterior, for both speaking and understanding the new language. Now, my QUESTION to you is this: Is there an Area for Religion/Spirituality in the Brain? If so, does it, too, imprint with age? It would seem that a similar study focused on this question, as well as other "thinking/understanding,perceiving" areas could be studied and found.

I looked up leisons on-line and it seems to be synonomus with tumor, is that the cast? What are some ideas that you may have (without seeing her, of course) of some things that should be done and questions I should be asking the doctors? I feel hesitant talking to them because I feel that her doctor, who is treating her now, let her symptoms go on far too long before checking anything out. Since a college professor, who has a doctor's degree in Psychology told me that human inteligence is inherited, I have been looking for information other than his word to support such an astonishing revelation. If my memory is not wrong, this professor said that 70% of human intelligence is inherited, such number leaves a lot to think about the nature/nurture theory.I cannot say I have gone to the library to look for any books to do research about this topic, but I have been searching several internet sites, and I have not had any luck finding proof, or any kind of evidence to support the professors' statement. Can anybody out there help me out to solve this mystery?

Subject: Blank Slate
Date: Mon Mar 11 00:02:18 EST 2002
Comments:
Is the brain a blank slate? If so are some peoples slates cleaner then others (Easier to write on) ? Does the brain REALLY think? Maybe it randomly generates words according to behavioral rules we learn according to which society we grow up in I.e. We develop a vocabulary according to what we hear or read and then generate thought forms based on what we hear or read the most Perhaps we REALLY are just energy and this energy is affected by other energies which then cause chemical imbalances which we try to rebalance through eating and sleeping What can not be balanced builds up and becomes EMOTION We then charge certain thoughts with these EMOTIONS in order to repeat the pleasurable ones This makes our thought patterns repetive and leads to repetitive behavior

My theory predicts that which we call "Intelligence" is just behaviour that is rewarded Intelligence Testing is then simply a reinforcement of behaviour society approves of Rewards include but are not limited to better education which leads to better jobs which leads to more money which leads to more material goods in the case of the male which leads to better marriage prospects therefore promise sustained sexual pleasure and intimacy as long as the numbers do not go down Many say IQ does not decline and it predicts happiness According to my theory this is as impossible as the weather staying the same True certain enviroments are more prone to cold weather and others to warm weather but weather itself is in constant flux

So I predict that intelligence like the weather is created by inside and outside influences and there is no stable predictor of success or failure Intelligence to me is a potential rather then a constant Not only is the slate blank when we come into this world but the slate must remain blank our entire lives in order for us to continue to write on it On this blank slate we continually erase more then we write so as to leave room to be who we really ARE No one equation or single number will ever sum up the potential of the human mind or explain away the soul which breaks the rules faster then scientist can make them Rules are defined as descriptions of what might be not of what IS The prison of concepts is like a hall of distorted mirrors When all these mirrors shatter you are left with who you really are The question remains can you face the blank slate of your being with nothing written on it?

please help me settle this debate with my partner! he insists that parenting, the basic caring-for-the-young actions, is a learned behavior. he even goes on to suggest that it is learned and "passed on through generations". whereas i agree that not all creatures of the earth have proven to be adept nurturers of their offspring, i am quite certain that the act of caring for one's young is purely instinctive. whether it is done well or not, is another matter. surely it is not so clearly defined, as i have been searching for some sort of written piece of information proving either case to no avail. but can you at least clarify for us? i thought "maternal instinct" was just that -- instinct. am i wrong?

The alien, Kevin Spacey, somehow understood every perspective and opionion of the patients. One of the patients had a problem that"everything stinks." Do mental patients use different parts of their brains that causes them to think that reality is different than it actually is?" And also "Do illegal drugs just cause a person to use different parts of thier brain Like the mental patient causing the same effect but for a certain amount of time." And does doing illegal drugs cause the user to use more or different parts of thier brain causing them to possibly seeing things more clearly because they have more to work with?" I was watching the movie "K-Pax" and noticed the mental patients acted similar to a people on different types of drugs that I have seen. is their a relationship between the parts of your brain being used in drugs and mental "problems"? or do the mental "problemed" people have a different outlook on life because they are constantly on a "TRIP"?

During my research of music psychology and its various effects on the human brain, i have learned there are two distinct categories that music falls under: Harmonic and Disharmoic. The type of music that falls under the category Harmonic, would be music with a defined melody and harmony, such as: classical. The other type would fall under Disharmonic, which would be anything without a defined melody, harmony, and a raise tempo going over the speed of the heart beat. This type of music is also addictive resuling of the rush of adrenoline because of raise tempo. An example of this music would be rock and rap. There are all kinds of negative effects on the person's behavior as well as their thinking habits. For example, a person listening to Disharmonic music may be overly aggressive as well as sensitive to to minor things that would not effect a person listening to the Harmonic category. They are also slower in thinking, relating, and learning new things. It also damages brain cells. My question is how can one type of music damage brain cells while the other basically has no effect?

my little sister had a riding accident, and has suffered damage to her thalamus. The swelling in her brain has started to go down, and the doctors are able to tell that her thalamus has had the greatest damage. There is some fluid in it that they might try to drain to release some pressure. I was wondering if you could tell me the function of the thalamus, and what I should expect injury wise when she wakes up. What will she lose from this injury? I have already done some research, but I would like to know more.

i was wondering what effects music has on a persons brain. In school they don't allow headphones in class, but ever since i started listening to random music (mainly linkin park, vivaldi, and requiem mass by mozart) in my right ear and just listen with my left ear that. I have paid more attention to the lecture, taken better notes, remembered more in greater detail about what is being said, analyzed more about the subject, and just generally improved. My grades have gone up about 1%-5%, depending on the class. I'm not the only one that has had this happen, is there any study that proves why music has these effects on human brains?

I'm a freshmen in highshool and I am doing a social science fair project. The question is, "What are the effects of listening to music on a child's learning?" I have found a lot of research on positive effects, but I also need negative effects. Can you please help me find some websites or information. The project is due at the end of this September, 2005. Thanks in advance. Ashley

I was wondering, for my Science project I'm testing how age and/or gender affects your reaction to certain things, like seeing a stoplight or watching TV. Does age or gender affect the thought process?
