SUMMARY

The word chakra is Sanskrit for wheel or disk and signifies one of seven basic energy centers in the body. Each of these centers correlates to major nerve ganglia branching forth from the spinal column. In addition the chakras also correlate to levels of consciousness, archetypal elements, developmental stages of life, colors, sounds, body functions, and much, much more.

In my Reiki practice I use traditional hand positions utilizing the body's energy centers called chakras. It is my belief that the chakras relate to the Main Ganglion both the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems. The left and right chains of ganglion are connected to the spinal chord averaging 22 ganglion a piece along the vertebral column. The first 6 chakras follow along the same order starting from the coccyx to the cervical vertebrae. However, the 7th chakra is not exactly a chakra because it is not associated with a particular vertebrae . According to Dr. John Mumford, "Harmonizing implies an ancient scheme of psychic anatomy that corresponds with our western physical, or gross/ macroscopic anatomy, of the central and autonomic nervous systems."
