Women, Sport, and Film Course

WEB PAPERS

At the end of the course, each student will write a 3-4 pages, double-spaced, 12 point type paper on a subject related to the course. These papers will be posted as links from a directory on this page, so that they can contribute to continuing general discussion of important issues related to women and sport.

Paper topics (select one):

Please answer one of three questions and post on the website here by Friday, December 10 at 5:00pm. Make sure to document appropriately. A hard copy should be put in Campus mail or dropped off at Schwartz Gymnasium addressed to: A. Campbell

Question 1
Using sport as the theme and women as the protagonists presents the opportunity the challenge the ‘typical Hollywood’ film narrative. Did any of the films successfully challenge the film narrative? Why or why not?

Question 2
Using all six films, how did the directors use images to support the themes? What images were particularly useful?

Question 3
Which three films did you find the most compelling? Which films explored the range of social issues of women in sport? Why and if you were the director what would you have added, deleted or changed to make the three others as compelling?

These papers will be posted on the web site and should be checked for proper documentation and citing when using another's work. Write your paper as instructed (3-4 pages, double-spaced, 12 point type) and print a hard copy to submit. Then make a second version of your paper by saving the original one as "text only". This new text-only version is the one you will submit electronically for posting. It will have lost some formatting, including double-spaced lines, underlining and boldfacing, and any special layouts usings tabs and tables, so try and avoid depending on these in your original paper (unless you are familiar with HTML tags and can add these later yourself). If paragraphs are not separated by a blank line in the text-only version, add a carriage return after each paragraph.
